Headliner: The Paul Abella Trio is a unique band on Chicago's Jazz scene. The combination of guitar, bass and cajon is sparse and earthy. Their playing is undeniably funky, their choice in setlists is...eclectic, and their sense of humor is immediately apparent. They take their cues from Jazz legends like Ramsey Lewis and Les McCann, the Funk and Soul sounds of The Meters and Booker T. and the MG's, and jam bands like The Grateful Dead and Phish. The end result is that The Paul Abella Trio is a soulful, grooving Jazz group that can fit in a corner and dish out some blues, funk and soul with solid, thoughtful improvisations.
Of course, none of this would be possible without a couple of amazing musicians.
Steve Knight has been playing and teaching in and around Chicago since 2016. He teaches and leads his own group, The Steve Knight Trio (his album, Persistence is excellent),
Chris Bernhardt is a fixture on the Jazz and Blues scenes in Chicago, playing with his own group, BMR4, with a number of Chicago's most in demand Blues artists, and he plays with a fantastic 80's cover band, The Jolly Ringwalds.
Most people know Paul from his day gig as the morning show host at WDCB, Chicago's Jazz and Blues station. But Paul is also a drummer and percussionist, specializing in the Peruvian box drum called the cajon.
Joining them for this special event is the amazing woodwind artist, Michael Levin. Michael is a long-time first call player on the Chicago Jazz scene, and he is incredible.
OPENER: Ami Saraiya and Shirley Rogier
Singer/songwriters Shirley Rogiers & Ami Saraiya are spearheading a new project (not yet named) after collaborating and harmonizing for years as part of the cabaret rock pop band Ami Saraiya & The Outcome. This new partnership promises to bring some of Shirley's theatrical burlesque and witty style along with Ami's folksy cabaret and gritty soul. The Artmaker's Outpost show in January will be their debut performance.
