DOUBLE HEADLINER- SONGS & STORIES WITH NICHOLAS TREMULIS & FRANK ORRALL
NICHOLAS TREMULIS
Born in 1960 to a jazz piano-playing father and a blues-singing mother, Tremulis grew up in the city's Greektown and in suburban Northbrook. The household was full of music and visiting musicians, influencing Tremulis to pick up the guitar as a teenager. After years of playing in clubs, he started the Nicholas Tremulis Band when he was in his twenties. The 13-member group played an engaging combination of rock, R&B, and soul, becoming one of the top bands in Chicago.
Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, signed the band to his label in the mid-'80s, releasing two LPs: The Nicholas Tremulis Band (1985) and More Than the Truth (1988). Asking for a contractual release from Island, Tremulis trimmed down the number of members in his band and released an EP, King of the Hill on Monsterdisc, and the LP Bloody Show on rock group Shoes' label, Black Vinyl.
In more recent times, Tremulis toured Europe, backed blues musicians on guitar, and started doing jingle work. He also was involved in a videotaped multi-artist benefit concert for Neon Street, a non-profit organization that helps troubled teens which featured the Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan among others. Joining with engineer/producer Rob Fraboni (Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt), whom he knew from his Island years, Tremulis formed the QRS label. Their debut release was the 14-track In Search of Woodfoot issued in October 1999.

Headliner #1 Anna Soltys & The Familiar
Anna Soltys and the Familiar is a modern Folk Rock band with an entrancing new sound. Anna spent the first part of her childhood in Poland followed by 6 years in Paris before she moved to her self-proclaimed home, Chicago. It is the cross-cultural awareness that may awaken the type of delivery that is so unique to her sound. On top of the music, her lyrical, poetic content fills the heart with an awareness of the self we could all use a little of.
Anna’s music explores and embodies elements of pain, strength, honesty, and sorrow. From start to finish, lyrically driven simple melodies leave you with a sense of colorful melancholy.
Anna Soltys- Guitar/Vocals
Larry Beers- Drums/Percussion/Glockenspiel
David Smith- Bass/Saxophone/ Clarinet
John Pirucello -E-Guitar/Mandolin/Pedal
Headliner #2 The Chris Greene Quartet
Chris Greene - saxes
Damian Espinosa - piano
Marc Piane - bass
Steve Corley - drums
The Chris Greene Quartet has been a highly visible part of Chicago’s jazz scene since 2005, and has maintained a stable lineup from the beginning, with the exception of Steve Corley, who has held the drum chair since 2011. Damian Espinosa on piano and keyboards and Marc Piane on acoustic and electric basses have been onboard since the beginning. Unique among Chicago bands, most of whom feature, by necessity, constantly shifting personnel, the CGQ has been able to develop a true group sound and feel, harking back to bands from the classic age of jazz when groups could stay together for long periods of time. While honoring the tradition, the CGQ incorporates elements of funk, hip-hop, rock, pop, the blues and reggae, reflecting their diverse backgrounds.
Greene's rewarding experiments on Conversance include a rendering of the jazz classic "You Don't Know What Love Is" with a Curtis Mayfield groove straight out of Superfly. The sonorous Greene original "Gentleman's Breakfast" is a "quick samba" inspired by Brazilian singers Ed Motta (with whom Greene has performed) and Elis Regina. And Piane joins the freewheeling party with "Thumper," a "crazy shit's gonna happen type of song" (in the words of the composer) that includes element of Frank Zappa and King Crimson. The title refers both to the bunny rabbit immortalized by Bambi and a baseball player's righteous pounding of home plate with his bat.
Conversance also includes Eddie Harris' "Boogie Woogie Bossa Nova," an obscure tune Greene prepared for a planned 2020 tribute to the late and legendary Chicago tenor saxophonist. (The show alas, was pre-empted by Covid.) There's also a bumptious reading of Duke Ellington's "Just Squeeze Me;" Espinosa's lyrical "Broken Glass," a great vehicle for the pianist, and Piane's romantically inclined "Inspiration.
“...a hearty tone and sharp wit...a proud descendant of such 60s soul-jazz saxophonists as Gene Ammons and Eddie Harris.”
-- DownBeat Magazine
“Chris Greene is a Chicago jazz treasure.”

Headliner: The Quentin Coaxum Quintet
Quentin Coaxum showed an affinity for music at a very young age. Upon taking up the trumpet in elementary school, he took a liking to the tapes and records left behind by his grandfather. It was these same recordings that inspired him to take an interest in jazz that would later blossom into a passion for all music. Originally growing up just outside of St. Louis, Missouri, Coaxum currently resides in Chicago, IL, where he is an active musician and educator. Coaxum holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Northern Illinois University, and a Masters of Music in Jazz Studies from Northwestern University. Since graduating, he’s become one of Chicagoʼs brightest young trumpeters.
During his time in Chicago, Coaxum has been a featured performer at The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Hyde Park Jazz Festival, and the University of Chicago’s Logan Arts Jazz Series. Coaxum’s first album as a leader, “Current”, was released on the Skiptone Music Label in 2014, and his most recent project, “You & I” was released inn September of 2020.
As a performer, Coaxum has garnered praise for his ability to compose and perform with modern lyricism while also displaying a knowledge of many musical traditions. His voice as a trumpeter reaches across genres in a way that captivates listeners and fellow musicians alike, and has afforded him the opportunity to perform with many world class musicians including Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, Dustin Laurenzi’s “Snaketime”, Jeff Swanson’s “Case-Fitter”, Christopher McBride’s “Quatuor De Force”, Solange Knowles, the Willerm Delisfort Project, and many more.
Coaxum currently resides in Evanston, IL and maintains a busy schedule as a performer and educator.
